What is Pipe Relining?

Pipe relining put simply is the process of installing an inner lining to a broken or cracked pipe without having to dig up or replace the pipe. This process can be broken up into 4 steps that pipe reliners undertake on every drain pipe relining job.

The Pipe Relining Process

1. Inspection & Diagnosis:

   Drain inspections using a CCTV drain camera allow a drainage plumber to inspect the drain to locate the blockage and diagnose the cause. This allows the team to decide on a plan of attack and determine how much of the pipe needs to be relined.

2. Cleaning

   The next step is to clean the pipe this can include the removal of the blockage and any debris that may have built up on the walls of the pipe allowing the new lining to better adhere to the walls of the pipe. This also lets a drainage plumber to locate the breakage better or crack allowing for a more comprehensive repair to ensure it lasts for as long as possible. When it comes to drain cleaning and unblocking a drain plumber uses a water jetter that uses high-pressure water to break up and remove debris in your pipes. A water jetter is considerably less damaging to pipes especially older more fragile clay or PVC pipes than a drain snake. They are also more efficient and effective at cleaning out all the debris not just the bigger clumps allowing the new lining to better adhere to the pipe.

3. Relining

   Once the pipe is clean and the crack or breakage has been located the drainage relining can begin. The lining used to reline the pipe consists of two parts a felt sleeve and an epoxy resin. The felt liner acts as the structure for the resin that when cured will create a new lining that in some cases is harder than the pipe around it. The benefit of the epoxy resin used is that it will cure at room or soil temp or if you need the job done faster we can use a heat pump to blow warm air through the pipe curing the pipe lining faster allowing you to get back to business.

4. Inspection

   The last step of the process is to conduct another CCTV camera inspection to ensure the lining has bonded correctly and that any cracks or breakages were repaired allowing for the drain to work as it would have when it was originally installed.
